World's tallest tower opening on January 4

The definite height of the Burj Dubai tower is still unknown, but it is understood that the tower will reach more than 800 metres in height.

The world's tallest tower, Burj Dubai, will be inaugurated on January 4, WAM reported yesterday.

The definite height of the building is still unknown, but it is understood that the tower will reach more than 800 metres.

The inauguration will take place under the patronage of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on January 4, the fourth anniversary of the accession of Shaikh Mohammad. The Burj Dubai is the tallest man-made structure ever built. Its construction began on September 21, 2004.

The building is part of the flagship development ‘Downtown Burj Dubai' along Shaikh Zayed Road, near Dubai's main business district.

In charge

The tower's architect was Adrian Smith, who worked with Skidmore, Owings and Merrill until 2006. The Chicago-based architecture and engineering firm SOM was in charge of the project.

The primary builder is South Korean Samsung Engineering & Construction, which also built the Taipei 101 and Petronas Twin Towers.

Turner Construction Company was chosen as the construction manager. The total budget for the Burj Dubai project is about $4.1 billion (Dh15.1 billion).

The primary structural system of the tower is reinforced concrete.

Burj Dubai's construction has used 330,000 cubic metres of concrete and 39,000 tonnes of steel rebar, and has taken 22 million man-hours.

Bin Laden's daughter escapes captivity in Iran

Brother says for the past twenty five days Eman has been staying at the Saudi embassy in Tehran, which is trying to negotiate with Iranian authorities for the release of all the siblings but to no avail.

Osama Bin Laden’s daughter, Eman, has managed to escape from Iranian guards and seek refuge at the Saudi Arabia Embassy in Tehran, reported the London-based Arabic daily Asharq Al Awsat.

Eman said that she was being held in captivity by the Iranian authorities along five of her brothers since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

The paper spoke to her brother Omar Bin Laden who said that his family was not aware of the wareabouts of Eman until last November when they received a call from her. She managed to escape the guards when they were taken out for shopping – which they were allowed to do once every six months.

He also said that for the past twenty five days Eman has been staying at the Saudi embassy in Tehran, which is trying to negotiate with Iranian authorities for the release of all the siblings but to no avail.

Saudi ambassador Fuad Qassas told the daily that the embassy has been trying to organise Eman’s departure to the kingdom, said the daily.

Prince William spends night on London street to support homeless teens

He spent a chilly night near Blackfriars Bridge last week with Seyi Obakin, the chief executive officer of British homeless charity Centrepoint.

A cold alley in central London is a far cry from a palace - but it was the spot Prince William chose to sleep recently to highlight the plight of homeless British teenagers. He spent a chilly night near Blackfriars Bridge last week with Seyi Obakin, the chief executive officer of British homeless charity Centrepoint.

William is the charity's patron.

A photograph shows William, who is 27, in jeans and a gray hooded sweatshirt, still recognisable despite his casual attire.

In a post to the charity's Web site on Tuesday, Obakin said they slept on cardboard boxes in an alleyway. He said temperatures that night fell to 4C .

Obakin said William wanted to "raise awareness of the problem and to be able to understand a little better" what homeless teenagers go through.

90-year old woman to compete in Quran competition

A 90- year old Emirati woman will compete with her 50 grandchildren in one of the Quran memorization competitions in Khorfakkan.

Fatima Mohammad Ali will participate in the competition by memorizing and reciting the Holy Quran. Her participation is considered first of its kind in the world.

Fatima joined Al Hassawi Holy Quran Award in 2001 since the Establishment of Quran and Sunnah Award in Sharjah.

Ahmad Mosa, one of her grandchildren, said she has been taking part in the competition despite her illiteracy, as she listens to cassettes and gets help from her other grandchildren.

Fatima walks 700 metres everyday to get to the mosque, where the memorization takes place and refuses to be dropped by anyone.

The Al Hassawi Holy Quran Award has prepared a special honouring ceremony for Fatima at the end of the competition
